A field visit to a degraded sand-mining site in Atokonyo, Gwadabawa L.G.A., Sokoto State, in 2019 became the starting point for Green Fillers.
What began as an academic exercise evolved into a community-led land restoration initiative, through which we restored 50+ hectares of degraded land, transforming it into a productive agroforestry system that produced 2 tonnes of onions and 5 tonnes of groundnuts.
Beyond agricultural production, the project helped restore hope among communities whose farmlands had been degraded, while creating opportunities for livelihoods, reforestation, and biodiversity recovery.
Building on this experience, our land restoration work has expanded to Lapai L.G.A., Niger State, where we continue to explore practical approaches to rehabilitating degraded landscapes.
